VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is a state owned and controlled non-profit limited liability company established by law and operating under the ownership steering of the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

VTT’s activities are focused on three areas: Knowledge intensive products and services, Smart industry and energy systems, and Solutions for natural resources and the environment. VTT is impact-driven and from its wide multi technological knowledge base, VTT can combine different technologies, produce information, upgrade technology knowledge, and create business intelligence and value added services for its stakeholders.

VTT role

VTT role in the REHAP project is in both material and product development.

In material development, in WP2 and WP3, VTT will be WP2 leader and will apply hot water extraction for the recovery of a tannin-enriched fraction from softwood barks to then be applied in the resin application. VTT will develop methods for the fractionation and purification of the straw hydrolysis residue lignin for further valorisation in resin applications. The most potential protocol will be tested in gram-scale / kg-scale.

VTT will also study the applicability of the purified lignin fractions obtained from the hydrolysis residues as raw materials for the resin application.

In product development in WP4 and WP5 VTT will perform building component evaluation, e.g. moisture and emissions properties, characterisation and indoor air quality. VTT will evaluate by physical test and simulations the performance of the composites. e.g. An indoor air quality simulator will be used to assess the performance of developed structure.
